DON’T HATE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

I can’t stress enough, having phone calls and zoom calls with a photographer before booking them for your wedding. If a photographer offers style that appeals to you, coverage that fits your willing budget. Maybe you asked a bunch of questions and the photographer asked a bunch of questions and you felt comfortable enough to pull the trigger.

Then you hated your photos…. I’ll be honest, sometimes if you hate photos, it has nothing to do with the photographer at all. They edited to their style, they removed flyaways or blemishes. Maybe they smoothed the skin. Maybe they removed people or trash cans or signs that you didn’t even know was there to begin with. Sometimes people are just flat out unhappy with the way they look and it has nothing to do with the photographer and their work, but they do what they can to make their client happy. As being a creative is truly a labor of love and they want their client to love their photos.

I’m getting off topic, but I want to encourage you to think about any time you’ve had your photo taken. What were some of the things that you disliked about them? Have you attended a wedding or been in a wedding where there was something that you didn’t like? Bring those things up! No question is a dumb question. As a photographer, I’d like to think that we’ve heard them all, but ultimately want you to be happy.

If you’re someone that likes to be in control and has a very specific shot list for different parts of the day and loves picture perfect “not a hair out of place“ type of photos, then you might benefit from a type A photographer, rather than someone a little more relaxed/candid and type B….or a hybrid like me 💁🏻‍♀️. Type A in planning, bringing B energy in wedding day, because we’ve done the “hard” stuff.

Did you hire a photographer you love, but still have questions leading up to your day? Ask them. Some things are just out of a photographers wheel house or goes against what they are comfortable editing, but it doesn’t hurt to ask, because common ground can always be met and there are options.

Not a huge detail person? Honestly, I used to be able to take it or leave it, but over the years, they’ve become a must. I ask my couples to put together a ziplock bag of stationary and save the dates. I ask them to set aside perfume, cologne watches, rings, earrings, necklaces, ties, cuff links. Anything really that goes on your body. And try to make sure it’s set aside by the time I get there.   I’ve also started to recently ask my couples to put together a little keepsake bag. Little things they might have saved from dating. Tickets, dried flowers, jewelry, trinkets, etc.. I’m loving this part! A flat lay of memories and nothing that’s perfectly placed together and matching.

I can’t tell you how many times couples have told me “Maybe a few detail shots, but I don’t need 20 pictures of my shoes or dress”. When I ask them what’s important to them to be captured. Thank God! Because I don’t want to edit 20 pictures of your shoes or dress, but the details you’ve put together, go with your day intentionally. They still tell as much of a story as the photo of your venue, the flowers you spent tons of money on, the cake you’ve designed to eat, the family heirlooms, the rings that fit your style. They are all equally important. They showcase your style and personality.   Also, you know those cooking/baking/makeup shows where they’re put on a tight clock and have to piece together something aesthetically pleasing and palpable with x amount of ingredients? That’s also like the amount of time we get to piece those shots together. It allows us photographers to get creative in a pinch and we love it.

WHY SNEAKING AWAY ON YOUR WEDDING DAY IS WORTH IT.

I get it! The day is packed and it’s about you… but also ends up being about a lot of other people too. The idea of sneaking away doesn’t seem possible or it feels selfish, but it is possible and it’s NOT selfish. Maybe it is and I just highly encourage it, because it’s your wedding day.

Anyways! If you’re getting married in a beautiful place. Why limit photos to just your venue. If your initial timeline doesn’t have enough wiggle room to go somewhere else magical, make it happen. Hire photography for an extra hour and head to a landmark, a dense forest, nearby water, big mountain views on a dirt road. Just make the time, because you only get one chance.

Why do I push this so much?

YOUR DAY WILL FEEL LIKE A WHIRLWIND. You get very little opportunity for just the two of you (well 3 if you count me). Take some time to pause, reset and just enjoy one another.

IT’S A MEMORY FOR THE TWO OF YOU. Nobody else gets to experience that very moment. You get to keep this one alllll to yourselves away from the bustle of the day.

LET MOTHER NATURE SHOW OFF, HUNNAYYY! I know you didn’t pick wherever you’re getting married because it’s ugly. Head to an overlook, a picturesque spot and get that mantle shot!

LOGISTICS? No prob, Bob. I can work anything into a timeline. We can figure out the best places to go that won’t take forever to get there and make it flow with your day. Whether it’s before the ceremony with some private vows or after your ceremony in an extended cocktail hour. We’ll make it happen!

Just the tip. I mean… here are some tips as we enter the “engagement season” and you’re looking for a photographer. Also, sorry if you anticipated getting engaged on Christmas holiday and your significant other didn’t get the hint. Persevere, my friend.

1. Set a budget. I like to ask couples where they’re at with their budget in photography. Not because I’m a greedy Gus, but sometimes I can’t work with that budget and can refer them to someone that can! I also like to see what I can really offer as far as coverage, second shooter, engagement session, etc… sometimes a couple has the budget, but photography isn’t high on their list. In which I would say, “your flowers will wilt. Your cake will be eaten. A DJ provides just as great of an experience as a band. Someone will complain about your food. Your photos are FOREVER”

2. Ask for full galleries. We show highlight reels here folks. Literally. Seeing a full gallery or two gives you a feel of what your day could look like. Of course every wedding day is different and should be treated as such, BUT I would want to see that I’m not booking someone that’s stolen other photographers content just to book. There’s a lot of sneaky b’s out there.

3. Book early. There are some photographers out there that already have their books closed for 2025. Jussayyyin.

4 (for bonus). Make sure they fit the vibe. Not only for the day, but could you see yourself being around them all day? Do they seem confident in what they do? Do they have experience in all lighting situations. Have a phone call. Get to know them and make sure they are asking questions about you and your day!

Let it snow let it snow let it snow! We’ve been in NY for the past week and have had a dose of actual winter and now I want all of the snowy winter sessions.

A few winter sessions coming up in January and I hope I’m driving into a snowy pines, snowflakes the size of my face, snowball fighting, snow angel making weather. Winter wonderlands are the best! I think because the springs typically sees a little snowfall and then it melts the same day, I long for days like this. Cheers to hot chocolates! Merry Belated Birthday, 8lb 6oz baby Jesus!
